my favorite Zukka trope is “it’s complicated”. No I won’t elaborate because IT’S COMPLICATED
Jk I will elaborate in the tags because I live for drama 😌

hehehehehhee i got obsessed with Zukka so i drew them (obviously still not finished), i started it in pencil cus i was at school when i got the ✨motivation✨ and then i went digital to make it easier to draw (cus i’m sure the paper was going to break from all the erasing i was going to do)
designing Sokka’s clothes was really fun, i tried to combine some Inuit’s clothing with Water tribe’s and just some extra details for fun and i really like how it turned out, tho with Zuko is another story, it was a pain making his clothing, first trying to find out if which culture was the Fire nation clothing based on, if it was Japanese or Chinese, then second i got frustrated trying to find good references so at the end i just grabbed one clothing i liked, fire nation clothes, and some details from other Zuko drawings, i obviously tried to make it as original as posible, i made lots of designs but with similar ideas in some parts, i ended up really liking it but i feel like i could have done a lot better to make it more fire nation or chinese/japanese (i don’t fucking know)
i like Sokka more cus he still looks like himself and the clothes still look like water tribe, Zuko thankfully still looks like himself because of the scar and his clothes don’t really say fire nation, but if it had nothing to do with the clothing looking like the fashion from their respective place and the characters looking like themselves, i prefer Zuko
BUT ANYWAYS, THEY’RE SO CUTE AHHHHHHHHHH i sometimes surprise myself with how amazing my drawings can look, i just hope i still get enough motivation to finish the drawing, cus its gonna be a lot of details and colors… haha, i love colors thats my fav thing when drawing😄😄 😃😃😀😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
i’m still not sure if i should add a background and lights and stuff, i need to improve drawing those kind of things

I need a Zukka arranged marriage AU where Sokka is grumpy about his impending arranged marriage and even more annoyed when the Fire Nation sends over a whole bunch of scrolls on proper courting practices and etiquette, because fuck if he’s reading all of that.
But then Zuko arrives and Sokka has an, “Oh, no, he’s hot,” moment. And even though he tries to remain aloof and act like he’s totally not into Zuko, he’s kind of intrigued by Zuko and also feels kind of protective of Zuko when Zuko doesn’t know basic information that even the youngest kid in the Water Tribe is aware is essential for survival. And like, Zuko seeks him out at meals to sit by him but also tries to give him space, and even if he is a bit stuffy and addicted to rules and etiquette. But he’s polite to Gran-Gran and to Sokka’s dad, and even tries to be nice to Katara, who’s even more skeptical of this arranged marriage than Sokka himself.
And like, one thing that’s really weird is that Zuko keeps giving Sokka gifts? Like, he gives Sokka spices from the Fire Nation, he gives Sokka a sword when he learns Sokka is interested in learning how to fight with one, etc. And he thinks this is nice and all, but he never really knows of anything to give Zuko in return. But hey, maybe the constant gifts are a weird Fire Nation way of showing affection?
But soon Zuko starts acting weird and distant, and Sokka can tell he’s stressed and he looks super tired and upset, and Sokka can’t get him to talk to him no matter what he tries. And Sokka is suddenly very worried for this other boy who he wouldn’t have cared about a few weeks ago but who seems so sad now.
So finally—FINALLY—Lt. Jee, who’s been watching this all go down with an unimpressed scowl on his face, basically tells Sokka that all those gifts from Zuko? Yeah, those are courting gifts, and by accepting them, Sokka showed that he’s considering Zuko as a suitor. But since he never reciprocated and gave Zuko anything return, the marriage can’t go through. And if Sokka doesn’t accept, Zuko will have to return to the Fire Nation in disgrace and Ozai would consider him a complete failure. And BTW, if Sokka had just READ THE SCROLLS that the Fire Nation sent over, Sokka would know this. (Lt. Jee is so done with this dude who thinks he can play games with his beloved Fire Prince’s heart. Not while Jee’s around.)
So IDK how this ends, but Sokka should be at least optimistic about his future with Zuko, and Zuko should be shyly pleased that his intended appreciated his efforts all along, yay. And also, Hakoda should find out about what a scummy dad Ozai is and adopt Zuko. Jee is happy his boy gets to be happy. Please reblog if you have other ideas/anything to add!

Good night with this silly meme i made to explain my situation to my friend.
Klance: there are things that could have been TOTALLY CANON, LOOK AT THEM!!! HOW THEY LOOK AT EACHOTHER THEY'RE GAY, SO GAY, THEY GAYEST PEOPLE ON SPACE, THEY SHOULD HAVE KISSED-
Zukka: they didn't have that much of a "okay that could be a potential crush" moment in the show, from my POV. But i can see them, they're so silly.

THAT famous zukka hug in the atla north and south comic : an essay you did not need, by me.
i was thinking about how, in writing, there should be no accidents or coincidences in how and why something is described, or the detail the writer chooses to use. for example, zuko tapping his hand on his desk would be used to show that he is impatient or anxious about something.
so THEN i decided to apply this to the zukka hug, because why not be delulu about these things idk.
first of all, here are the zukka hug pages for context:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
disclaimer: i don’t really know how the fandom feels about the comics. personally i like them, so i will proceed with that bias in mind. also please take this with the humour that is intended, it’s more fun that way.
i go down a sabre tooth moose lion hole below the cut.
this whole scene to me is largely what we all love about atla - humour and good characterisation combined with serious subject matter. king kuei and bosco are the comic relief and oblivious party in the face of quite a complicated issue, as zuko himself acknowledges. this humour then extends to kuei offering zuko the chance to join in on his hug with bosco, which zuko politely refuses. obviously, there is the clear issue of zuko being afraid of being eaten by a bear, but we’ll pretend that ernest hemingway is grading our papers here, okay.
it is a very deliberate writing choice and contrast to have zuko refuse hugs from one person/animal and then immediately and happily accept one from sokka. (see also: sokka running excitedly with a big grin on his face at the bottom of page 17 to greet them, naming zuko first, but remembering that he is a good ambassador to the swt and using their proper titles despite his excitement. more silliness mixed with seriousness. see also, also: HE RAAAAAN!) zuko may be touch averse and not a huggy person, but screw that when it’s sokka who’s offering the hug.
remember there are no accidents in good writing. kuei happily says: hello friends! to which, in both that panel and the next, he is clearly ignored. sokka and zuko are so absorbed in hugging each other that sokka neglects his duties in welcoming them both properly. zuko : 2 swt ambassador role: 0. also ignored is the fact that kuei brought his bear, which would normally be subject to some kind of smartass comment from our boomerang boi, even if he knows he’s obsessed with his pet from the ba sing se episodes.
this could be an actual mistake, but sokka ran towards zuko, who was standing in front of kuei. but in the hug panel, sokka is between them. that means kuei walked all the way around them trying to get their attention, and it still didn’t work. sokka, nor zuko, say a further word to kuei. like exactly how much tunnel vision is there in this, my goddddd.
bosco is protecting kuei and sokka is protecting zuko. could be why they mirrored them and their positions in the hug panel, so not a mistake. a swt person says: protecting foreigners, sokka?! but that is exactly what he does by ignoring the protesters and telling zuko not to worry about them. despite wanting to do his duty to everyone sokka puts zuko first, basically, and doesn’t care about what they all think of him. that’s kind of huge for sokka.
yes, hakoda is injured at this time and yes he’s proud of sokka, but surely as chief he would have gone to meet the earth king and firelord? why did the writers go to so much effort making sure that sokka was there to meet zuko and have them hugging take up a third of an entire page when printing and space in the comics is such a consideration? it is clearly important, y’all.
their faces when they see each other. sokka can’t stop grinning and zuko closes his eyes in relief he’s so happy. enough said.
sokka says: thanks so much for coming! like he doesn’t already know zuko would travel the world just to make him happy or help in what’s important to him. have you forgotten boiling rock, sokka? because that dude you’re wrapped around, acting like he’s been starved of you, sure hasn’t.
this comic is all about nations coming together and traditions being upheld and shared. in other words, marry him sokka. it is in your diplomatic interests to do so.
in utterly insane conclusion:
Tumblr media
i am always surprised at how much they made the effort in the writing for this one scene. i don’t see the comics as something that tease ships, they aren’t natla. what i do see is two guys who clearly care about each other, almost to the detriment of their roles and responsibilities, and their relationship was worth the effort taken in the writing and artwork to show that. it is super heckin sweet. does this mean i think zukka is canon or could be? no. maybe did i have fun pretending and overanalyzing every detail? yes.
ps in all seriousness, the answer is that this is about my fav boy and how far he has come in his character growth journey - exhibit a from ‘the avatar returns’ episode:
Tumblr media
the end, i am getting blocked and going to jail but it’s okay because zukka is my bosco hug.

It’s a bit of a self-own to express pride that the Zukka shipping base doesn’t produce many essays or meta analysis on the ship. That kind of content and engagement with the text is arguably one of the best things a fandom can do when it comes to shipping. Of course, not everything has to include in-depth analysis because sometimes you just want to ship something based on vibes and a dynamic you like. But…it is kinda odd to see this be touted as some amazing quality to the Zukka crowd (particularly when it’s a not-so-subtle dig at Zutara shippers).
To me, it reads as them trying to prove themselves as “humble” shippers by constantly trying to prove how unseriously they take it. But like…you can take it seriously? I don’t ship Zukka, but I see the appeal and can understand why that dynamic appeals to people, so it puzzles me that a bunch of Zukka shippers pride themselves on this front. Maybe they should consider channeling their energy into writing metas instead of constantly trying to prove that they’re above Zutara shippers lol

Gordon Cormier (Aang) and Ian Ousley (Sokka) answer a fan's question about whether there is a possibility of Zukka becoming a thing in future seasons of the show - Toronto Comicon, March 17 2024
transcript under the cut!
Fan: I am wondering in the future if there’s any hope for the Zukka shippers. I’m just putting it out there, wondering if that’s anything I should continue looking for.
Ian: I hear you. I hear you.
Host: You can't spoil it. Netflix has shooters, so.
Ian: That's probably true. Um, I - we haven't, we haven't read any scripts yet, so you can only hope, you know. Yeah, we have no control over that. And I don't know. So I'm right there with you.
Gordon: Are you guys talking about Zuko and Sokka, like Zukka?
Me, recording: Yeeees.
Gordon: Okay, well, I also haven't read any scripts. But I would like to say on behalf of the whole fan base and the whole cast, we are really excited to see what you guys might do with it if you do, because, I mean, I'm in full support. I think that they're a perfect fit.
Host: The charisma is there...
Gordon: Yeah, you guys are both…it'd be really cute, you know.
Host: Yeah. I'm currently writing fanfic about it right now, so, I gotchu.
Gordon, to fan: Thank you.
Ian: I hear you. Thanks.

Here we go again!! Okay, let me breath first!! 😮‍💨😮‍💨
Zuko was 16 years old, Katara was 14 years old. So, their age gap was only 2 years!
2 YEARS!!!
It wasn't like Zuko was a grown man, while Katara was a little girl.
They were both teenagers!!!
A teenage girl having a crush on a teenage boy with 2 years age gap and vice versa was normal.
Aang was 12 years old boy, had a crush on 14 years old Katara. What was their age gap? 2 YEARS!! So, when Katara was 16 years old, Aang was still 14 years old.
Jet was 16 years old, had a relationship with 14 years old Katara, yet no one talked about their age gap! What was their age gap again? 2 YEARS!!
It's not wrong but it doesn't feel right!
Even Anon said it's not wrong! But it doesn't feel right, because Anon just making things up to bashing Zutara!! Who cares if the arguments don't make any sense?
Katara literally bully Zuko, that's why we should ship Zukka??
That's called relationship development, Honey!
To show that two characters are well written, their interactions must have a reason and make sense. More importantly, there should be no holes/jumps (how to say that? I don't know the right word) in their development so it doesn't feel rushed or forced.
Anon said Zutara was the worst ship, but actually Zuko and Katara were well written because they act as they should!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zuko and Katara were enemies and they act like enemies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katara and Zuko still enemies when they met in Crystal Catacomb, but then they tried to understand each other. They weren't friends yet when Zuko betrayed her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katara got mad and bullied him!
That's make sense!! I mean, what should Katara do after someone betrayed her? Hug him???
Actually, these scenes showed that Katara could vent her anger too, she could demand someone to understand her feeling, and not always her who understand others like she always did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And what Zuko did? Yes, he made it up to her!! He understand what she needed and accompany her to facing her trauma without told her what she should or shouldn't do (except told her to get some rest).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Katara, by her own choice forgive him and they become partners/friends who can complement each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They even saved each other lives!!
What made them the worst ship after their relationship development written with this coherent storyline? No rushed, no forced. They were enemies to friends (and to lovers 😂) after all, of course they had conflicts like a great war.
And it was way way way better than, lets say...
Two characters fought in one episode, then they separated in a few episodes later, and they kissed in the end of the story without resolving their problem, even without any conversation at all.
Or like one character left their lover in jail, forgot about her for a few episodes, didn't even remember to release her out of the prison, and then they met again like nothing happened and kiss.
Those are examples of rushed and forced storylines.
Wait, those storylines sound familiar?? 🤔🤔
And what make Zukka better than Zutara, though? Why should I ship them?? Zukka were just crack ship and didn't even have relationship development!!
Or maybe because of this??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, really? Because Zutara had more than that!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or this??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, first of all, Sokka was going on a date with Suki. And second of all, don't forget their conversation after that!!
Sokka : So what's on your mind? Zuko : Your sister. She hates me! And I don't know why, but I do care what she thinks of me.
Tumblr media
Or, maybe because they were so awkward toward each other that make them cute?
Tumblr media
But it seems like these two teenagers were more awkward when they couldn't get rid of boyfriend-girlfriend allegations. Oh, wait, do I see a blush on their cheeks? I wonder why.
Well, what else?? Because I can't think of another scene in the show that makes Zukka a better ship than Zutara.

“Please come get me.” For Zukka
Please make this as angsty and emotional as possible I was it to hurt thank you
(Maybe self-inflicted damage? Not necessarily SH but just by being willfully reckless?)
For this prompt game!
“You don’t think this is concerning?”
“No, Sokka,” Katara says again, patient, a familiar blend of exasperation and fondness in her chest as she glances over to where he’s fiddling with his wrist wraps, frowning down at Zuko’s latest letter. “I think it’s fine.”
“You’re sure?” he presses, anxious in a way he so rarely lets himself be this openly, at least in front of the people he’s anxious about. And because she knows how much he does worry no matter how much he tries to hide it, she leans over, gently taking the letter out of his hand and indulging him in scanning it over once again.
“He says it’s not as cold as he expected,” she says, skimming over the lines as Sokka pulls a little face, “That Arnook was nice, that he misses you—” she peaks through her lashes at that bit, looking for any twitch on his face as he just continues to nod along. “—that he’s looking forward to seeing you again, that the food’s good, that tomorrow’s going to be a big day.”
She lets her hand drop to look at him, expectant, sighing when he just continues to nod, face anxious.
“Sokka,” she says gently, “He says he’s fine. And I know you miss him,” she adds when he continues to look unconvinced.
“That’s not it,” he protests immediately.
“But he’s only going to be gone for a few weeks.”
“Katara, that’s not—”
“And you’ll see him soon, okay?” she finishes, reaching out to grab his hand, giving it a little squeeze until he sighs and leans back.
“Yeah,” he says, rubbing a hand over his face. “Yeah, okay,” he repeats, grabbing back the letter and putting on a bright smile like she doesn’t know exactly how to see through that, like she can’t see the way his thumb continues to worry at the edge of it. “So what was it you needed help with again?”
“Penguin sledding,” she says, abruptly changing the plan for the day and grinning at him when he blinks, nonplussed. “We need to pick out the best hills for the new season, for the little ones,” she says. “Make some maps, maybe, plan some routes, do some schedules.” All of his favorite things she can think of, to keep his mind off his worry.
--
“I don’t know,” Aang says apologetically as he and Sokka jump across a gap where the temple floor’s fallen away. Probably no one should stay in this hallway until they fix that… “I don’t think I’m hearing it.”
“No?” Sokka says, the syllable cracking with uncertainty.
“Tell me again, though,” Aang says quickly. “What did it say?”
Sokka huffs, a faint furrow between his brows as he digs out two pieces of paper, peeling the latest letter off the top. “He greets me,” he rattles off, eyes flicking over the page, Aang keeping half an eye on the placement of his feet since Sokka isn’t anymore, “He talks a bit about the canals, he mentions Yugoda, bending, bending, bending—”
“Oh?” Aang says, perking up. “Did he—”
“Stay focused,” Sokka orders, waving a hiding hand.
Aang sighs but obediently puts on his most attentive face.
“And then he says—” Sokka clears his throat, drawing himself up, so Aang makes sure he’s actually paying attention. “—that he had an interesting afternoon of discussions, that Sei Zun is missing his office, and that everything is going fine.”
Aang nods, projecting attentive with everything he has and freezing a little when Sokka just hits him with an expectant look.
“I mean,” Aang says slowly, scratching the back of his head. “It sounds like everything is going fine?”
“Fucking—” Sokka cuts off with an aggravated noise, throwing his hands up.
“I can write him myself for the bending stuff,” Aang blurts, scrambling for something to get the worried tightness off of Sokka’s face and wincing when Sokka just lets out another garbled noise because…yeah. That…probably wasn’t it.
--
“Run it back at me again, Loverboy,” Toph orders, flicking a little bit of stone toward the sound of Sokka’s feet when he makes a questioning little noise. “I can hear you worrying over there,” she says, giving an exasperated look in his general direction. “Get it out.”
He pauses, heartbeat a little too quick like it’s been all day, then, cautiously, “You already said it was nothing.”
“Maybe I was wrong,” she shrugs. Sokka is excitable and far more anxious than he tries to let on, but that excitableness has gotten them out of more than one bind.
“…Um,” he says after a moment, hair rustling as he scratches under his wolftail.
“I mean, I don’t think I am,” she allows, grinning when he snorts and making a kicking up her feet. “But maybe you explained it to my shitty.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he laughs, a good sound over the rustle of papers as he tugs out those letters again. “Okay,” he says, getting serious, her words as much on his heartbeat as his words as she tries to pick up on what exactly is worrying him about this, “So it starts with saying things are fine—” ba-DUMP. “—talks about training a bit with some of the staff fighters—” ba-dump. “—talks about a canal ride—” BA-dump, interesting. “—he had a formal dinner, the food was nice, sea prune stew reminded me of him.” Ba-dump, ba-dump, ba-dump, filling up his expectant silence as she plays back the words and weighs them and tries to pick them apart and…
“Yeah, Sokka,” she finally says, apologetic and wincing a little when he audibly slumps, heart dropping in a way she usually can’t literally sense. “I’m not hearing it.”
“You don’t—he doesn’t seem off to you?” Sokka presses, sounding like he isn’t sure whether to let the anxiety out or whether he wants to be assured.
“I mean, based on how you read it…” Toph shrugs. She always assumes Sokka puts the most dramatic read on anything that he’s able to, given the opportunity. He’s second only to Zuko, there.
“I just, I feel like I should go up there,” he says, weight shifting back and forth and back and forth.
“Do you think,” she says carefully, “That that might muddy the waters for him?” She flicks a pebble back and forth across the ground when he stays conspicuously silent. “He’s trying to build his own relationships, Sokka. Right?”
“Yeah,” he acknowledges, reluctant, beads rattling softly as he shakes his head. “I just—I just don’t think he’s okay.”
“He said he’s fine, like, multiple times in each letter.”
“Yeah,” he says again after a beat, sounding doubtful, and Toph nods, slow and serious and silently tossing aside every loose plan they had for the day. They don’t need to be talking to officials and discussing infrastructure projects when he’s in a mood like this, she decides. They need to be riding Omashu’s mail carts.
--
“And none of these are horny?” Mai checks again as she takes the offered stack of letters.
“No,” Sokka says again, openly fretting, not even exasperated, so Mai shrugs and quickly skims through the stack. She keeps her face still, her movements measured as she sips her sweet waterorange juice, her eyes skipping over bland descriptions, over details of Zuko’s day that are all about what Zuko did—
“Oh,” Mai says.
“Yeah?” Sokka pauses in his pacing, something half hopeful and half nervous on his face.
—over talk of other people and none of himself—
“Oh yeah,” Mai repeats, setting down her juice.
“Right?”
—and fine, fine, fine repeated over and over again.
“Yeah, this is not good,” Mai agrees.
“Thank you.”
“Wow,” she says, going back over that last letter again and lingering over the careful curve of Zuko’s characters. “He’s about to lose his shit.”
“Okay, yes.”
She flicks him a flat stare, incredulous. “Why are you still here?”
“He’s supposed to be building relationships with the Northern Water Tribe on his own,” Sokka says, shoving both hands through his hair and looking like he has to physically stop himself from tearing I out. “And everyone is saying I’m going to get in the way, and I don’t want to mess it up for him but I also don’t want it to be harder than it has to be, and he’s not okay I don’t care what everyone—bird."
Mai instinctively ducks beneath the table, watching from safety as a messenger hawk dives down to smack Sokka square in the back, the pair of them screaming and squawking and flailing in a mess of limbs and wings until the hawk finally manages to dump its scroll case and take off, disgruntled, leaving Sokka mussed and breathing heavily in its wake.
Mai cautiously slides back into her chair, Sokka’s eyes wide and flicking around the sky as she waits as long as she can before huffing pointed.
“Well,” she demands, flicking the scroll an expectant look. “What does it say?” Because she knows one of Azula’s overdramatic, overly trained birds when she sees one, which only two people in the entire Fire Nation use, and that one clearly wasn’t for her.
Sokka scrambles into motion, fumbling the scroll case opening, hands hasty and quick and—“Fuck.”
Mai straightens, snatching the scrap of paper out of the air when Sokka suddenly tosses it at her and takes off, staring after him a moment before carefully flattening it out along with the others he left her, knowing he’ll want them all back, and raising her eyebrows when she sees one firmly scrawled line in Zuko’s distinctly overly formal hand:
            Please come get me
“Well,” Mai purses her lips, wondering how exactly Sokka’s going to get himself there. “Fuck.”
--
Sokka leaps out of the newly streamlined transit balloon he’s been designing as soon as its close enough to the ground for him to not fuck up his knee with the landing, shouting a thanks over his shoulder and dashing over the freshly constructed landing pads, calling hellos in response to the startled exclamations he gets and scanning across the promenade for—
“Zuko!” he cries as he catches sight of that breadth of shoulders he’d recognize anywhere, that politely attentive angle of his head, the deep maroon of his robes standing out against the snow and in the cluster of periwinkle blue around him.
Zuko pivots toward him, face momentarily open, surprised and startled and relieved. “Sokka!” he calls back, immediately ignoring the others, hurrying forward, not exactly funning but intent, focused, determined, sweeping Sokka into his arms the second he’s close enough, leaning into him as Sokka leans back, sighing in relief to be surrounded by his warmth, to feel him solid and heavy against him and so, so beloved.
“Hey, love,” Sokka whispers, ignoring the uncertain crowd around them and mouthing a silent thank you when Poak catches his eye before waving everyone else back to give them space.
“Hey,” Zuko says into his shoulder, shaky, laughing a little and clutching Sokka even tighter.
“I missed you,” Sokka says, clearing his throat and feeling his eyes stinging as he presses his smile against Zuko’s hair.
“Mhm.” Zuko pushes harder into Sokka’s chest.
“I decided I couldn’t wait to see you again,” Sokka murmurs, running a hand up Zuko’s back, something in him unwinding as he feels the familiar lines of Zuko's back moving as Zuko laughs again, wet. “So I figured hey, why not take a little trip.”
“Is that your new experimental design?” Zuko asks, shifting just enough to glance over Sokka’s shoulder. “It didn’t drop you out of the air.”
“Nope,” Sokka grins, sinking his fingers into Zuko’s hair. “It did not.”
Zuko hums, turning into his neck. “I missed you,” he whispers, heartfelt.
“Yeah,” Sokka says, the words coming out thick as he pulls Zuko more firmly against him. “Me too, buddy.”
Zuko sighs, relaxing into him inch by inch, the two of them just breathing together, even and slowly falling into sync.
“I am going,” Zuko finally says, tone nearly abstract, distant, “To punch him in the fucking face.”
Sokka blinks a little. Wha—
“If I have to see one more smug look—”
“Ah,” Sokka says, realizing.
“—or listen to one more fucking sour, pretend offhand comment—”
“Right,” Sokka says, smoothing a hand down Zuko’s back and glancing around, making sure Pakku isn’t actually in Zuko’s line of sight right now.
“You would not believe—”
“Oh, I would,” Sokka says, with feeling. The meetings he's been in with that man...
“That man,” Zuko hisses, literally steaming with the force of his anger.
“Yup,” Sokka agrees, giving him a solid pat. Sokka knows exactly how he feels.
“If Katara gets to lay him out—”
“Katara isn’t the Fire Lord,” Sokka quickly points out. And Pakku is, for better or worse, enough of an ass not to want anyone to know he got decked by a girl.
“I’ll fucking give it up for the chance to—”
“Okay, okay,” Sokka says, giving Zuko another firm pat and glancing around for some redirection. Lighting things on fire should probably be out, Sokka didn’t bring his sword—“Want to go find a big stick?”
Zuko is still a moment, then pulls back just enough to peak at him, gold eye half-narrowed and suspicious.
“I can throw some snowballs,” Sokka offers, inviting. “You can smack them.” Zuko hesitates, openly considering, so Sokka adds, "They explode."
“Okay let’s go,” Zuko says almost before he gets the words out, grabbing his hand and interlacing their fingers together as he hauls Sokka off and away from the confused clump of Northerners, Sokka tossing a wave over his shoulder and an apologetic shrug, happy to let himself be pulled along—at least until Zuko pauses at the first intersection, uncertain, and Sokka can take over.

“I was ready to fight for us. I was ready to find a way, any way for us to work. And you were the one who ran away when it got too hard!” “That’s not what happened and you know it!” Sokka snaps. “It was never going to work, and it was stupid to keep pretending otherwise! I’m sorry Zuko, I am, but just because you are the Fire Lord, just because we– we were in love, everything wasn’t going to magically fall into place.” Zuko still has a stubborn expression on his face. There are angry tears in his eyes when he says, “We could’ve figured it out. We could’ve…been us. We could’ve had a good life together.” “Yeah, well, I guess we won’t ever know.” (or, the twenty years between Zuko and Sokka breaking up and finally getting together again, shown in 5 times they don’t say goodbye, +1 time they don’t have to)
here is my divorced zukka fic that i have been working on for fifty million years <3 as I mention in the notes of the fic, i borrowed some iconic lines from some iconic fictional divorced couples that I am listing under the read more
Part one:
"We could’ve been us." - Good Omens season two
"We could’ve had a good life together" - Brokeback Mountain
Part two:
Everything from: “I just…maybe we should talk about,” Zuko gestures between the two of them, “this. I feel like there’s some things I wouldn't mind saying. And explaining.” to “We gave it a go” is adapted from a TomShiv moment in the last season of Succession.
Part three:
"Sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it." - Brokeback Mountain
Part four:
"I love you" / "It’ll pass" - Fleabag
"I love you" / "I know" - Empire Strikes Back
i'm a fool who didn't keep a list of everything i used as i went, so if you think i missed anything please let me know!! again i am in no way trying to pass these as my own lines

Easy (a tiny zukka fic)
Sokka was, without a doubt, the smartest person Zuko knew--and he was a complete fool.
Zuko wasn't really sure how he could be both.
He had seen Sokka create some of the greatest plans and inventions, things Zuko could never dream of thinking up in a thousand years, and yet--
He'd also chosen to be with him. Which was markedly the most foolish decision possible.
"Hey," Sokka said, knocking Zuko's shoulder with his own.
They were sitting on the roof of one of the buildings near the palace, overlooking the Fire Nation city. It was the only place his advisors couldn't interrupt them. The sun had set a while ago, but the sky was just bright enough to make out Sokka's concerned features.
"What are you thinking about?" Sokka asked. "You got that look on your face."
Zuko's nose scrunched up. "What look?"
Sokka waved his hand in the air like he was grasping something intangible. "Like you're waiting for lightning to strike."
"I'm not thinking about anything," he grumbled.
Sokka snorted a laugh. "Come on. You're going to have to do better than that."
Zuko's frown deepened and he looked back over the city. Of course Sokka could read him.
Smoke curled from his fingertips. It was easy to pretend with the others. He always wore a scowl, so when he was in a bad mood, no one was the wiser. Except for Sokka. Somehow, Sokka could always tell the difference. He was always there, trying to make things better. Trying to be there for him. Being good to him, and Zuko wasn't...
Zuko didn't deserve him.
"I think we should end this."
"Yeah, it is getting pretty late," Sokka said, stretching his sore arms casually.
Zuko knew the wrappings and the compression sleeve on his arms hid countless battle scars. Several of them he'd gotten because of Zuko. Either inflicted by him as a teenager or now, from Sokka protecting him as the firelord.
"I'm exhausted," Sokka continued. "Suki and I spent the whole day sparring. Every time I think I get the upper hand, I end up flat on my butt--"
"No." Zuko's mouth tasted like ash. "We should end this. Us."
Sokka stilled, then dissolved in a confused chuckle. "What?"
Zuko's jaw clenched. "It was a mistake to begin with."
"What are you talking about?" His smile was gone now.
Zuko forced his gaze away, not wanting to see the pain creeping up on Sokka's features.
"We're over."
Sokka was a messy crier. Right now, his face was probably pinched like a lemon, with tears welling in his eyes--
"Nope."
Zuko blinked and looked at him in shock, but Sokka's expression was almost breezy.
"I don't accept," Sokka said loftily, leaning back casually like they were talking about what food to eat for dinner. "You'll have to try again some other time."
"Wha--are you even listening to me?" Zuko scrambled up to stand over him. "I said it's over. We're breaking up!"
"And I'm saying you better try harder," Sokka shot back. "Otherwise you're stuck with me."
Zuko closed his trap in surprise.
Sokka crossed his arms in a definitive nature that Zuko had grown accustomed to. It meant he was standing his ground, and that not even Toph could budge him. It was quite helpful as an ambassador, but now...
"That's not how it works!" Sparks ignited in his palms, prickling his skin.
Sokka got up, facing him on the edge of the roof.
It was dark now, and the only light was from the lanterns dimly illuminating the streets, and the lights bounced off Sokka's features as he spoke. "What, you think I'm going to let someone as great as you slip from my fingers that easily?"
Zuko's expression broke, and any semblance that he had control over this conversation shattered with his face.
"Yeah," Sokka said softly, and his shoulders dropped. "That's what I thought this was about." He reached forward, slowly taking his hand. He smoothed over Zuko's palm, putting out the smoke that threatened to erupt, even though the heat singed his gloves. "I'm not easy to get rid of," he murmured, tracing over his fingertips, blackened from ash. He tore his gaze up, meeting Zuko's eyes. "But you're easy to love."
Love?
Zuko knew that any relationship with him, romantic or not, was anything but easy. Zuko's throat closed with bile, and the only thing he felt other than his heart pounding in his chest was Sokka's warm touch.
Sokka smiled, and leaned forward, his thumb brushing against his scarred cheek. "Loving you is the easiest thing I've ever done," he said. "It's easy when I make you smile, and I think about how that's all I ever want to do. It's easy when I wake up in the morning, and I'm trapped under your heavy arm that's a thousand degrees."
In spite of everything, Zuko's face twitched into a hesitant smile.
"It's easy when I see you help your people. It's easy when you listen to me drone on and on about my inventions, and when you laugh at all my bad sarcastic jokes." He closed the space between them, and all Zuko could focus on was his voice.
"And it's easy to love you now. Even when you're trying to push me away because you don't see the person I see."
Zuko's eyes flicked back and forth. Agni, he was the one who was going to ugly cry, wasn't he.
He hugged him, and Sokka staggered back from the weight, parts of the roof crumbling off beneath their feet.
"Roof, roof! We're on the roof!" He said, laughing, and finally found his footing with his heel partially over the edge, but he was smiling. "I love you, Zuko."
"I love you, too," Zuko said, mumbling against his neck as he held him tightly, and he didn't let go.

I don't mean to bombard you with asks or anything like that, but are there any noncanon ships you really like? Or even ones you really hate, aside from Zvtara?
when it comes to non-canon ships there are very very few i actually fuck with or can even see the vision behind. i guess to put it simply, if i can’t see it happening in canon then i can’t find it in me to ship them, and even for the ships where i can see it happening, i don’t actively seek out content for them
non-canon ships i like
katara x jiang -> katara likes em bald and pretty idk what else to tell yall. i am fully convinced they had a lil thing for each other but there was a heist going on so they didn’t have time to worry about that
kuzaang -> i can totally see pre-iceberg aang and kuzon having an innocent early childhood crush on each other. the kind where holding hands is like legendary stuff
tyzula -> azula just gives off repressed lesbian energy and i can’t help but interpret their lil conversation in the beach episode as two gay girls who kinda like each other but dont realize it’s romantic and who also don’t wanna pass off their flirting as flirting so it’s all disguised as straight girl talk. “omg you’re like soooo pretty” and “omg you should totally ask him (me) out! you could be with anybody in this room cause you’re soooo pretty (i’m including me in that).” not to mention the way ty lee getting so much male attention hits azula close to home. i think two things can be true at once where azula is both perplexed she hasn’t had the same luck and is upset that ty lee specifically is getting attention (cause lesbian)
teoaang -> more so in the sense i could see teo maybe having a lil crush on aang
non-canon ships i don’t like (other than zutara)
(also i’m talking explicitly about how i feel about the ships, not the shippers. i don’t care if you ship them)
azutara -> just no please
sokka x azula -> i have to look away
azulaang -> it’s getting painful (really good fan art tho i must admit)
zukka -> this one doesn’t bother me as much and i can consume fanfics where they are a background pair, but i mean very very background. like they’re only ever mentioned and they contribute nothing to the story 😭
zukaang -> i made a joke once about how this ship has potential in a tier list, so this may seem hypocritical, but i made that tier list (along with every tier list posted on this acc) with an irl who got really into atla after the netflix version came out, and we died laughing putting zukaang in a tier of their own. idk it was funny as fuck in the moment and we were kinda greening out, so every time i look back at that list i giggle a lil bit. and i kind of have this ship to thank for that memory so i can’t bring myself to hate it hate it just because it makes me laugh so much and reminisce on that moment. also, great fan art. there’s this one artist who drew aang and zuko so adorably for their au and it is admittedly one of my favorite atla fanarts. but, overall, i don’t ship them together like at all
taang -> the most sibling coded pair to ever sibling code. i absolutely can’t with this one. like this is genuinely in the top worst atla ships of all time
katoph -> this just feels like taang 2.0 to me
